John Oliphant Indicted for First Degree Murder in Daytona Shooting
20-year-old John Oliphant III has been indicted for first degree murder in the shooting death of a man in Daytona Beach on March 4th. Oliphant, a resident of Lauderdale Lakes in Broward County, had his case read before a grand jury in Volusia County last week. According to prosecutors, Oliphant is said to have broken into a residence on Butler Blvd in Daytona Beach on March 4th. While inside, he reportedly fatally shot Walter Floyd. Floyd had reportedly believed that the guns brandished by Oliphant and one other assailant weren't real, sparking him to fight back before being shot. The incident occurred at around 4:00 am. One other victim inside the home was said to have been pistol-whipped during the break-in. Oliphant has been held at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond since his arrest on March 4th. He's been charged with first degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, burglary with assault or battery, and fentanyl trafficking between four and fourteen grams. The Daytona Beach Police Department, who investigated the shooting, said at the time that the intruders and victims were thought to be familiar with one another. Floyd was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center to be treated, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
